Interrompue sans cesse par d'autres travaux comme le chantier de Sixtine ou celui du tombeau des Médicis de Michel-Ange, il s'agit à la fois d'une sorte de « work in progress » avant la lettre et de l'uvre la plus aboutie de toute son existence, riche de l'expérience de toute une vie de créateur : un ensemble planifié et réalisé avec un soin extrême, sans cesse remanié et resté inachevé à la basilique Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens. Entre 1999 et 2003, la restauration du monument (de loin la plus importante effectuée sur une uvre de Michel-Ange après celle de la chapelle Sixtine) a permis d'effectuer une campagne photographique exceptionnelle avec des prises de vue qui n'auraient pas pu être faites autrement. Mais surtout, en dehors de figures incontestées comme les Esclaves, Léa, Rachel et les filles de Laban, elle a permis d'identifier, de manière encore plus évidente que précédemment, la main du maître dans la figure de Jules II, dans les trois statues de l'étage inférieur, le Moïse et les deux allégories de la Vie active et de la Vie contemplative, et l'abaissement du niveau des statues de la Vierge, de la Sibylle et du Prophète, ces dernières exécutées par des collaborateurs mais, dans certaines parties, témoignant également de la présence du maître. Ainsi est apparue toute la complexité de la collaboration de Michel-Ange avec ses assistants dans son atelier au point qu'il est parfois difficile de discerner la main des uns et des autres. La réalisation de relevés précis du cadre architectural et de son rapport avec l'église ont mis en évidence comment la décision de Michel-Ange en mai 1533 de déplacer le tombeau dans le transept droit s'explique aussi par son intention de le transformer en un organisme vivant qui resplendirait sous les reflets quasi magiques de la lumière en provenance de la grande lunette ― rouverte depuis ― et résonnerait des chants et des prières de voix invisibles. Ces réflexions sur l'éclairage naturel (en particulier de la figure du Moïse) ont été confirmées par la découverte d'études à la sanguine de la main de Michel Ange et de ses aides à même le mur du bâtiment.
