No Binding. Condizione: Near Fine. Broadside, folio (17 by 11 inches), single sheet printed in black, folded. A presentation copy, inscribed to Margaret and William Gibson by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams: "For Margaret and Bill - Affection and gratitude, Charles" and "All my love, Lee," on the top right. The recipients, the playwright William Gibson, authored endearing works like "The Miracle Worker" (1959) and his wife Margaret Brenman Gibson, the noted psychoanalyst, directed a psychiatric institution in western Massachusetts. ---- "Golden Boy," the 1964 musical, from a book by Clifford Odets and William Gibson, starred Sammy Davis, Jr. Lee Adams contributed the lyrics and Charles Strouse the music. The Broadway production, produced by Hillard Elkins, directed by Arthur Penn, and choreographed by Donald McKayle, opened on October 20, 1964, at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 568 performances. [Together with] William Gibson's personal Zippo lighter, engraved on the front "Hillard Elkins presents SAMMY DAVIS in the new musical GOLDEN BOY." Hillard engraved the back to Gibson, "Dear Bill: Thanks, with love, Hilly, Oct. 20, 1964." In his preface to "Golden Boy," Gibson saluted "Hilly, a hybrid original of 34 with a fast wit and insinuating intelligence, part rocket, part goniff, part magus at the cradle of talent." A magnificent piece of theatre memorabilia.
