Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: No jacket, as issued. Reprint of 1952 ed., Limited 150 copies. Staten Island, New York: Maurizio Martino, 1997. BRAND NEW in perfect condition. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright, clean, square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. No date (but 1997, First Martino printing "strictly limited to 150 copies"). Facsimile reprint of the 1952 revision of a 1914 Book Club of California publication. Described here are 1,000 printed books relating to California's discovery, exploration, settlement, pioneer life, discovery of gold, Mexican relations, the Chinese question, local literature, etc. This reprint includes the 1952 edition's additional notes and Henry R. Wagner's new foreword with its fascinating history of Cowan's career as bookseller, collector, and bibliographer. Don't confuse this volume with the better known 1933 edition. Unlike the 1933 edition, this work includes entries relating to the Pacific Northwest, as well as to California. And significantly, as Joel Silver observed in his AB article (Feb 3, 1992), "what differentiates [this edition's] individual entries from those in the 1933 edition, however, are the explanatory notes. Nearly every entry. contains an annotation, and many of these were abridged or eliminated in the [1933] edition. The notes [in this edition] as well as its entries for Pacific Northwest materials, ensure its continued utility." The two editions complement each other and may be used together profitably. Bound in the original dark blue cloth, stamped in bright gold over a red panel on the spine. Zamorano 80. Besterman 1085. . Reprint of 1952 ed., Limited 150 copies. Hardcover. New/No jacket, as issued. xxxvii, 337pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
