This publication, issue 65 of the new series of Trudy geologicheskago komiteta (Works of the Geological Committee), announces the discovery of the extensive underground oil reserves of the Maikop area, which transformed the entire region and economic structure of Russia. When the German army during WWII was advancing towards the Caucasus, the Soviets set the oil fields ablaze, which interrupted the German petrol supply.
