Hardcover. First Edition; Third Printing. Very Good +. No jacket, no slipcase. Both volumes: owner's name (typographer and author Stephen O. Saxe) on free endpaper. Corners bumped, light stains to boards. Top and bottom spine worn and fraying. V2: spine has a 1" split outer bottom crease. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
Very good condition overall, the two volumes present clean and unfaded in the publisher's original blue cloth, with bright silver spine lettering, firm square bindings, and crisp, unmarked interiors. The heavy coated stock used for the hundreds of plates remains notably fresh, with reproductions retaining strong color and detail. Light occasional handling evidence appears at the extreme outer edges only. The books show no ownership marks or institutional traces. The original publisher's slipcase?often missing?is present in very good condition. The slipcase is structurally sound, showing the expected rubbing, surface marks, and small areas of abrasion along the edges and corners, but still protecting the set effectively and displaying the original printed panel to good effect. Overall, a well-preserved example of a famously fragile production. One of the most ambitious visual reference compilations of the twentieth century. Issued by Crown in 1948, The Book of Costume assembles more than 3,000 illustrations across two substantial volumes, covering dress, jewelry, coiffure, ornament, and related material culture from antiquity through the nineteenth century. Complete sets of the true first printing in clean condition?and especially those retaining the publisher's slipcase?are markedly scarce on the market. This example offers an unusually strong and appealing combination of condition, completeness, and bibliographic importance. From the personal collection of Tony Walton (1934-2022), Academy Award- and multiple Tony Award-winning stage and costume designer, celebrated for his imaginative work in stage and film.
