Several small tears as creases and a couple of holes noted. Document has some embossed and ink stamps. Alexander Campbell was born in 1739 in Killin, Perth, Scotland and died on 6 Apr 1806 in Seafield House, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland. The Inventory of Alexander Campbell, comptroller of the customs at Port Glasgow, residing at Greenock, was recorded 17 July 1823 in the Glasgow Sheriff Court. Archibald McGuffie [purchaser] was stated as an Agent for The British Linen Company. The Edinburgh-based British Linen was "the only British bank to be formed on the basis of an industrial charter" and, as the name suggests, its roots lay in the Scottish linen industry. The original driving force behind the formation of the British Linen Company (as it was first named) was Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton. He was a lawyer landowner, had been active in the promotion of the Royal Bank of Scotland and, according to Checkland, "from 1735 to 1766 he was the most important man in the politics of Scotland." The charter included the right to bank unless this was specifically prohibited. As British Linen began to develop its banking business, it found it had a ready-made structure in the form of the old linen agencies. Malcolm's list of branch openings suggests that there were 18 bank branches by 1800. This is a contract between Mr. Alexander Campbell, Esquire, Comptroller of the Customs at Port Glasgow as being authorized by and taking full burden on him for Elizabeth Mary Ann and Catherine Campbell sisters and heirs portioners of the late Archibald Campbell formerly of Providence Estate of Manchenniel in the Island of Jamaica last of Greenock their Brother German who was only lawful son procreated between the deceased John Campbell sometime Merchant in Inneskip and Jean Campbell spouses and as such serve and entered and Intsdt heir in General to his further on the one part and Archibald McGuffie Agent for the British Lenin Company of Greenock on the other part in manner following that is to say the said Alexander Campbell as being authorised and taking the burden as aforesaid has sold and Disponed and by these presents, in consideration of the price then underwritten hereby sells and dispones to and in favor of the said Archibald McGuffie his heirs and assignees heritably and irredeemably all and haill that piece of ground lying upon e the south side of that street in Greenock called Cathcart Street of the following mensurations Right forty feet in length alongst the front of the said street running eastward from the last corner of the House formerly belonging to the now deceased Archibald Galbraith Shipmaster alongst the said street until it joins the common passage between the said ground and the ground served the the deceased Charles Lord Cathcart to Alexander Morrison Shipmaster now belonging to John Kippen Merchant and there turning and running in a streight line backwards for the space of seventy feet until it Joins the Garden Hedge then belonging to Daniel Thomson but not to the said John Kippen and from there running alongst the said Garden Hedge for the space of Seventy three feet until it joins the south west corner of the said Garden Hedge, and then turning and running alongst the sound side of the said Garden Hedge for the space of fifty seven feet six inches until it joins the Garden Hedge belonging to Sir John Stewart Shaw of Greenock and Blackhall Baronal and their turning and running backward along the last mentioned Garden Hedge for the space of Sixty seven feet until it joins the March stone betwixt the said ground and the said Garden belonging to the said Sir John Stewart Shall, and there turning and running westward alongst the last mentioned Garden Hedge for the space of twenty feet eight inches until it Joins the back ground which belonged to the said lade Archibald Galbraith, and there turning and running in a streight line Northward for the space of one hundred and seventy four feet until it joins the front of the foresaid street where the aforesaid mensurations began amounting the whole of the said piece of ground in measure to twenty two falls and one sixth part of a fall of ground Salvo justo clculo and bounded as follows.eight hundred pounds Sterling as the prince of the said subject hereby sold.
