On the cover of this pamphlet the title reads as "Glasgow Cathedral - A short History and Guide". Inside the title page reads "The Cathedral Church of St. Mungo - a Short History and Guide, with Illustrations". The author was The Rev. Nevile Davidson, who was the Minister of the Cathedral. St. Kentigern was the founder of the Glasgow Cathedral. He is popularly known as St. Mungo. Mungo is the Scots (or Cumbric) "pet name" (a hypocorism) meaning "Dear One". It probably derives from the Welsh "fy nghu' (My Dear One). St. Kentigern is thought to have been born in 518 in Fife, Scotland. He lived a long life and is much venerated in Scotland, and other places around the world. This pamphlet is 32 pages in length, and measures 4 3/4" x 7 1/4"; red, printed wraps are bound with two metal staples; the text and illustrations are printed on calendered paper (glossy paper). It has six illustrations, one (on the verso of the front cover) is a line drawing of the Church, one is a reproduction of a drawing of the Quire Screen, and four are black-and-white halftone photographs of the Church. There is also a chart showing the various institutions and groups who generously donated toward the upkeep of the Cathedral. The book ends with a chronological list of Bishops, Archbishops, and ministers of the Church. Packed into this small pamphlet is a lot of history and information about the physical structure of this hallowed structure. The author, the Very Reverend Andrew Nevile Davidson (1899 - 1976), was a senior Church of Scotland Minister of Glasgow Cathedral from 1935 to his retirement in 1967. He was he was appointed in 1946 the Chaplain-in-Ordinary in Scotland to King George VI; upon King George's death he was then appointed the Chaplain-in-Ordinary in Scotland to Queen Elizabeth II. This position he held until 1969. TITLE : The Cathedral Church of St. Mungo (Glasgow) : A Short History and Guide (With Illustrations) AUTHOR : The Rev. Nevile Davidson (1899 - 1976) IMPRINT : Privately printed by Friends of Glasgow Cathedral (Founded by Rev. Davidson in 1936) PLACE : Glasgow, Scotland DATE : No Date Given. [ The pamphlet's date of issue is not given, but within the text there is a reference to a clock that was installed in 1958. This is the latest date in the pamphlet, and so I have surmised an approximate printing date: circa 1959 - 1960. ] PRINTER : Bell and Bain, Ltd. (Glasgow) EDITION : Not Given [ There seems to have been a 16 page pamphlet of the same title issued in 1938. This 32 page issue is, I presume, the First Edition of the enlarged pamphlet] STATUS : Out of Print - OP CONDITION . VERY GOOD . This is a previously owned book, that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR - The front has a few shallow stress creases extending from the spine fold; the rear cover has modest surface rub and a touch of weathering (along the spine fold), else the exterior is clean and presentable. BINDING - The staples are slightly tarnished, but are holding quite well, no leaves are detached or loose, the whole being solid. INTERIOR - Clean and free of marking. There are no signatures.
