Le Père Desgodins (1826-1913) de la Société des missions étrangères de Paris, est un des premiers missionnaires français des Marches tibétaines. Il émet le souhait de rencontrer Francis Garnier, alors en poste au Dépôt des cartes et plan à l occasion d un passage à Paris.La lettre recopiée par le frère de Desgodins est une copieuse et passionnante note de lecture, inédite, du Voyage d'exploration en Indochine que Garnier donne par épisode au Tour du Monde, notamment sur la partie chinoise du récit que le missionnaire connaît bien. Il qualifie d "injuste, méchant et ingrat" les assertions de Garnier sur les pères Proteau et Fenouille dont il est longuement question, et fustige "l esprit très antireligieux qui préside à la rédaction de ce voyage. Quand à démêlés avec la curiosité et l insolence des chinois [.] je n y étais pas [.] mais n est-ce pas exagéré [.] J ai eu a subir les mêmes ennuis, seul, sans revolver, sans escorte, je m en suis bien débarrassé, souvent par une simple plaisanterie." Il liste certaines erreurs, notamment celle de méconnaître la prédominance du pouvoir civile en Chine. Pour finir il lui souhaite bon vent " malgré les critiques que je viens de faire, malgré les petites rancunes que j éprouve pour la manière dont il traite les missionnaires, en attendant mon tour ! Mais M. Garnier n a pas apprécié tous les obstacles, je l attends à la frontière du Tibet.".

Reliure demi maroquin à coins. Condizione: Assez bon. Edition Originale. Dictionnaire Thibétain Latin Français. Rare exemplaire de l'édition originale. Le Père Desgodins arrive en 1894 à la Maison de Nazareth des Missions Etrangères pour travailler sur la publication de ce dictionnaire qui ne verra le jour qu'en 1899. Exemplaire ayant probablement fait parti d'une bibliothèque ou d'une collection car il porte un numéro de référence sur la page de titre ainsi qu'un tampon carré chinois absent de l'exemplaire de la BNF. Avec aussi une petite étiquette volante portant des caractères chinois. Reliure demi maroquin à coins, cinq faux nerfs, état d'usage, traces de frottement et épidermures, coins un peu émoussés, collationné complet mais le feuillet de la page de tittre et le premierde la préface sont désolidarisés de l'ensemble. De même que le feuillet 1085-1086 qui présente aussi des manques touchant le texte. Le feuillet 879-880 est déchiré sans manque sur une douzaine de cm, quelques feuillets ont été réparé dans le passé avec de l'adhésif, celui du feuillet 887-888 a bruni. Sinon intérieur uniformément un peu jauni avec des rousseurs claires éparses, XII p. + 1087 p. + errata. Voir photos, n'hésitez pas à m'en demander des complémentaires car le site est limité à 5 photos. La qualité médiocre du papier utilisé explique ces dégradations, augmenté par le fait qu'il s'agit d'un ouvrage de référence souvent manipulé (quelques rares annotations au crayons par un propriétaire précédent).
