Libro
Soft cover. Condizione: Good. This is "Chaucer's Sexual Poetics" by Carolyn Dinshaw, Published by the University of Wisconsin Press, © 1989, this is the Third Printing, circa 1995, paperback format. This particular copy came from the personal library of a college professor, and , but for a few pages in one chapter that have some inked notations, the book is clean and free of marking (See our picture provided which displays the type of marking - and please scroll down to read our full condition report). ******************************************* From the cover's write-up: "A learned, engaging, and useful book, Carolyn Dinshaw's "Chaucer's Sexual Poetics" should be welcomed by both Chaucerians and many other readers interested in the history of gender and the ongoing project of interpreting canonical male authors with feminist questions in mind. Dinshaw situates her reading of Chaucer in the context of a traditional assumption about the gendered nature of literary activity : namely, the pervasive and influential idea that the written text is a woman, the reader/interpreter a man . She persuasively argues for the continuity of patriarchal hermeneutics from Augustine to Levi-Strauss and Lacan. She uncovers telling presuppositions about gender underlying modern textual editing practices as well as in the two apparently opposing schools of twentieth-century criticism represented by D. W. Robertson, Jr., and E. Talbot Donaldson . According to Dinshaw, Chaucer himself stands at least partially outside this tradition of sexual politics, in a position from which he both exposes the consequences of its discourse on 'lived lives', male and female, and imagines alternatives. Her study is organized in such a way as to suggest a developmental poetics illustrating this point. This book should spark lively debate." (Elaine Tuttle Hansen in "medieval Feminist Newsletter" *********************************************** From a review in "Choice" : "Dinshaw's book must be read by anyone interested in gender issues in Chaucer . the last chapter, 'Eunuch Hermeneutics', brilliantly links religion, poetics, and gender, suggesting that the Pardoner's God be considered as an alternative to the binary poles of masculine and feminine . the book is learned, varied, and theoretically challenging." ************************************************* CHAPTERS : - Introduction : Chaucer's Sexual Poetics / Reading Like a Man The Critics, the Narrator, Troilus, and Pandarus / "the naked text in English to declare" : The "Legend of the Good Woman" / The Law of Man and its "Abhomynacions" / ""Close /bele chose" " The wife of Bath and Her Glossators / Griselda Translated / Eunuch Hermeneutics ************************************************** TITLE : Chaucer's Sexual Poetics / AUTHOR : Carolyn Dinshaw / IMPRINT : University of Wisconsin Press / PLACE : Madison, Wisconsin / EDITION : Third Printing / DATE : (©1989) . an unstated later date, likely circa 1994 / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback; contains an Introductions, abbreviations, notes, Bibliography, and an Index; x + 310 pages; 6" x 9" , pictorial wraps, glued. *********************************************** CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - this is a previously owned book that has a few , brief marginal markings, but which is otherwise clean and unmarked, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- A reading crease extends along the spine; the front cover has a slight yawn; the rear cover has an affixed university price label (From Stanford), else the exterior is clean and bright. BINDING -- Still tight INTERIOR : From page 150 to page 154, and nowhere else in the book, are a few marginal and textual marks in red ink by a professor (I've shown a view of the page which seems most egregiously marked - hence the condition grade) - else the interior is clean and free of marking.
