Prima edizione di quest'opera che descrive il primo caso di ulcera gastrica e contiene la prima descrizione anatomico-patologica dell'edema angioneurotico (edema di Quincke) e del calcinoma rettale. "Nel 1586, intanto, erano stati stampati a Mantova, presso Fr. Osanna, i 6 libri della De medica historia mirabili, la sua opera maggiore, ampia raccolta di casi clinici e di osservazioni anatomiche personali, di autori antichi, arabi, medievali e contemporanei, tra le prime del genere, anticipatrice di quella tendenza alla compilazione di ampie casistiche clinichee anatornopatologiche che nel XVIII secolo avrà il suo massimo autore in Giovanni Battista Morgagni. Il D. fu il primo, tra l'altro, a descrivere l'ulcera gastrica in cadavere e l'edema cosiddetto di Quincke. L'opera ebbe notevole fortuna: ristampata a Venezia, da Valgrisi, nel 1588, ebbe una nuova edizione con aggiunte sempre a Venezia, presso i Giunti, nel 1597. Il medico tedesco Gregorio Horst curò altre due edizioni a Francoforte nel 1613 e nel 1664. Il libro ha una notevole importanza anche dal punto di vista della storia sociale: vi sono raccolti infatti anche casi singolari e meravigliosi che il gusto dell'epoca ricercava" (D.B.I., s.v.). Garrison-Morton cita anche l'opera come la seconda significativa storia della medicina dopo quella di Champier del 1506. Marcello Donati, nato a Correggio nel 1538 e morto a Firenze nel 1602, medico, fu maestro, segretario e consigliere del duca Vincenzo Gonzaga. Ebbe il titolo di Conte di Ponzano e fu membro dell' Accademia degli Invaghiti col nome di Segreto (cfr. A. Zanca, Notizie sulla vita e sulle opere di Marcello Donati da Mantova (1538-1602): medico, umanista, uomo di stato, Pisa, 1964).
