Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj) [Roland] Cosimini (illustratore). First Edition. (price-clipped) [a nice solid copy, would grade Near Fine but for some wear to the bottom of the rear cover that's resulted in about a one-inch exposure of the board through the worn cloth at the bottom edge; the jacket is somewhat age-darkened, with light to moderate wear at extremities, 1-1/2" split (closed) at top front hinge]. A "delightful and soundly constructed story of family life," the author's first novel, written when she was 19, that per the jacket blurb achieves "that rarest of things in any novel, that almost unheard-of thing in a first novel -- true penetration and understanding." (Ahem.) The New York Times critic gave it an encouraging yet not especially glowing review, allowing for the author's tender age and stating that she "shows faults, excesses [and] immaturities, but [also] potential talents that with development and discipline should make her work distinctive." About the book itself, however, the review was less generous: "[It] suffers through a certain looseness of incident and lack of form; it proceeds from nothing to nothing, and interesting as are most of its characters, none of them develops in any truly significant fashion." Be that as it may, the book does boast beautiful two-toned wraparound dust jacket art, depicting three young folks (two women and a man) lounging attractively at the crest of a windswept hillock. The author published one more novel, "Five on Parade," in 1930, before turning her attention primarily to poetry and short fiction; whether she ever achieved the called-for development and discipline, I couldn't say. NOISBN.

Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. (Roland) Cosimini (illustratore). First Edition. Thick 8vo. Pp. 305. Decorated endpapers. Bound in brown cloth with tan lettering stamped on front cover and spine. In the dust jacket with wrap-around illustration. Price of $2.50 remains intact on front flap. An especially bright copy. First edition of the first novel by Doris Peel, written at age 19. The 1927 New York Times review cited the author's "superior comprehension," her "strong interest in character" and "ability to articulate a sense of values in life." About the dust jacket illustrator, Roland Francis Cosimini (b. 1898) we know little, other than he was born in France and, like Peel, lived in Massachusetts, and created a superb illustration depicting three windblown characters atop a hill, taking in a commanding view of the countryside. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
