Mandeville was born in New York, became a teacher and came to California in 1849 at the age of 25 where he also taught. He was elected to the State Assembly in 18 52 and later to the Senate. He also served as U.S. Surveyor, General State Commissioner of Immigration and as State Controller.

Reprint of the very rare 1856 first printing. One of 1250 numbered copies. [4], 98pp. Well-illustrated with plates, reproductions, drawings, facsimiles, etc. Blue cloth, gilt-decorated cover. Some foxing to edges of text block, light spotting to lower edge of front cover, else a nice copy. "Memoirs and personal correspondence relative to the circus business through the Gold Country in the 50's." Rowe was a celebrated equestrian. Includes a description of the Pioneer circus while in San Francisco, held at Jackson and Montgomery streets. [see: Cowan: p.544].

Andrew Rowe, born in North Carolina in 1819, orphaned at age eight, ran away from his guardian at age 10 and joined the circus where he learned to ride horses. He eventually became a pioneer in the equestrian business, formed his own circus and travelled throughout California.

Original green cloth, lettered in black on front cover. Slight rubbing to corners and spine ends. A fine copy. Story of John Thomas Mason who crossed the plains in 1851 and spent the next 79 years in the Rabbit Creek region (Plumas county) and Sierra County. Covers the history and growth of Rabbit Creek along with numerous accounts of local events of the early days. Much on the mining areas, local individuals, the California Stage Company, etc.

In this volume the donated telegrams are collected and illustrated with Thurberesque drawings. Also with reproductions of some of the original telegrams. Very good condition in the original colorful dustjacket.
