Paper. Condizione: Good. First Edition. An Original Letter Signed by Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster to Lady Ashburnham. Undated but part secretarial except the signature. Circa1865. The letter asking her support for a charity by purchasing a ticket. Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, 1825-1899, was an English landowner, politician and racehorse owner. He inherited the estate of Eaton Hall in Cheshire and land in Mayfair and Belgravia, London, and spent much of his fortune in developing these properties. Although he was a MP from the age of 22, and then a member of the House of Lords, his main interests were not in politics, but rather in his estates, in horse racing, and in country pursuits. He developed the stud at Eaton Hall and achieved success in racing his horses, winning the Derby on four occasions. Size is 178mm x 114mm. Condition is good. Light folding crease. Loss to edge. Folded three times for postage. Good firm signature 'Westminster', and with the name of the recipient neatly cut away: 'Major / 1st Lancashire Eng[ee]r. Vol[un]t[ee]rs. / Liverpool.' Neatly written, and reading: 'Sir, / I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter by to-days post, and on account of the shortness of the notice I write at once to return my assent to your application for your Corps to attend The New Brighton Parade on the 7th. inst. / I have the honor to be / Your obedt Servant / Westminster'.

Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with broken red wax seal, Penny Red stamp and postmarks, to: 'Revd. Dr. Wiseman, | St. Mary's College | Oscott | Nr. Birmingham'. 22 lines of text, closely and neatly written. Daly begins: 'I am sorry to trouble you by laying before you the Letters [not present] of a man of the name of Thomas Male - Bookseller & Bookbinder residing at St. Mary's, who has by representing himself as patronized by you got Credit from me to the Amount of £11 . 9 . 11 - and very shortly after declared himself Insolvent & has taken the benefit of the Act after putting me to some Costs.' He asks Wiseman to 'observe his Letter No. 2 which is in answer to mine requesting a reference as to character - this Letter to me stating that he lived at the Lodge of the College, by the desire of his Lordship, & for the convenience of Father Phelan, quite threw me off my guard, and I made no farther inquiry, but sent the Goods, conceiving that no man could be hardy enough to give such a prompt reference to such Gentlemen if he did not deserve the fullest confidence.' He is not writing to make 'any the most distant claim' on Wiseman: 'I only wish to shew that some how or other your name has been used by this man for, in my opinion, a fraud, & in the hope that you will not suffer this person to act in a similar way again.' He concludes by expressing himself 'fortunate, in escaping as I have done, with so small a loss & no disgrace - for under the full impression of the rectitude of the man I laid two of his Letters before two respectable Booksellers, Messrs. Bickers & Darling, requesting them to send him, if they had them, some of the Catholic Divinity & Catholic Books which he said were for the College, but fortunately for me, they declined sending them.' The BBTI states that Daly traded from before 1832 to 1855, and has him at these two London addresses before Greville Street: 14 Leicester Street, Leicester Square; 19 Red Lion Square. The BBTI also has Thomas Male trading at Duke Street, Birmingham, as bookbinder from before 1834 to after 1835.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 2 page letter, 4 pages folded each page 11 by 18 cms. On black edged mourning notepaper from Grosvenor House, London dated March 2 1882. His wife Lady Constance Leveson - Gower had died in 1880. About 65 words signed 'Westminster' to 'My Dear Miss Hill' mentioned he had talked to the Prince of Wales about a scheme in Paddington which he suspects the Prince will do nothing about. The addressee is almost certainly Octavia Hill who was involved in housing scheme in this are and was a known correspondent of the Duke on political matters. Very good indeed. Signedes.
