Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Folio, original wrappers, 72pp. Jurkovic was the preeminent Slovak architect from the Secessionist period through the immediate post WWII building design. This is a monument to Dr. Milan Stefanik (1889-1929), astronomer and military leader who was a founder of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia with Tomas Masaryk. Stefanik died in a tragic airplane crash in the mountains of Slovakia at an early age, and Jurkovic was inspired to construct this remarkable edifice in the highlands at the crash site quite soon after Stefanik's death to commemorate his contribution to the new country. Dusan Jurkovic (1868-1947) was a great Slovak architect working from the turn of the century through all the modernist movements that occurred in Czechoslovakia. He evolved a very individual, rustic Slovak style for which he was highly acclaimed, somewhat parallel to the Zakopane style of Stanislaw Witkiewicz the elder in Poland. Later he moved into Czech Functionalism with an equal success. Many photos and plans, color plate. OCLC locates holdings at UCB,UCLA, Boston PL, Wolfsonian. A fine copy. Text in Slovak.
