The crisis in late medieval philosophy also included ethics; it questioned the validity and argumentative structures of traditional norms and demanded new, reliable rules of action. The call for a moral philosophy as practical guidance for acting was taken up by the early humanists, who thus revived the ancient question of the possibility of a philosophically based art of living. In the contributions to this volume, the efforts of the humanists will be considered with regard to their roots in history, their concrete achievements and their long-term effects.
