Â"Letters mingle souls," said John Donne, and no better proof of this statement could be found than this collection cf the letters of Kahlil Gibran, author of Â'The ProphetÂ', Â'The Broken WingsÂ' and Â'The Voice of the MasterÂ'. The letters in this book cover the years from 1904- to 1930 and are an illuminating self-portrait of the poet during his most productive period. There are letters to his sister Miriana and other members of his family; thoughtful letters to his editor, Ameen Guraieb; and, above all, impassioned letters to May Ziadeh, the Lebanese writer with whom Gibran formed an extraordinary relationship entirely through correspondence. This intimate record of a restless, creative mind has been translated with sensitive perspicacity by Anthony Rizcalla Ferris, who has also written helpful explanatory notes to accompany them. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 94 pages. Rear cover slightly grubby & faint ink marks to front cover. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Endpapers browned, text block clean. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good-. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean, but have generalized toning. The dust jacket has several small edge tears, some rubbing and nicking, along with bumping to the spine ends. The rear cover has several small spots of ground-in dirt. "Born in a village of the Ottoman-ruled Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate to a Maronite family, the young Gibran immigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States in 1895. As his mother worked as a seamstress, he was enrolled at a school in Boston, where his creative abilities were quickly noticed by a teacher who presented him to photographer and publisher F. Holland Day. Gibran was sent back to his native land by his family at the age of fifteen to enroll at the Collège de la Sagesse in Beirut. Returning to Boston upon his youngest sister's death in 1902, he lost his older half-brother and his mother the following year, seemingly relying afterwards on his remaining sister's income from her work at a dressmaker's shop for some time. With great sensitivity, Gibran describes his passion as a youth for Selma Karamy, the girl of Beirut who first unfolded to him the secrets of love. But it is a love that is doomed by a social convention that forces Selma into marriage with another man. Portraying the happiness and infinite sorrow of his relationship with Selma, Gibran at the same time probes the spiritual meaning of human existence with profound compassion." name on the inside cover and some edge wear to the cover.
