No Binding. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. A beautiful, original hand-colored engraving that shows the entrance to the Vauxhall Gardens in London, a pavilion, a bandstand, and the Grand Walk lined by two rows of trees in a sweeping perspective view. People are shown in elegant formal attire along the walk and on the pavilion. No date, circa 1760. Paper measures 15 1/2" x 9 1/4"; printed area measures 15" x 8 1/2." This print is also a "vue d'optique," which were very popular in the latter half of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth century. Vue d'optique prints emphasized perspective in their compositions and produced an illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope. Below the printed area is the title in both French and English and the following information: "Canaletto delin [drawn by Canaletto]; Rooker sculp [engraved by Rooker]; Publish'd according to Act of Parliament Decr 21, 1759. London, printed for, Sold by Sayer at the Golden Buck." Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768), better known as Canaletto, was an Italian engraver and painter of vedute (city views) in Venice, Rome, and London and capricci (fantastical architectural landscapes). Edward Rooker (c. 1712-1774) was an English draftsman, engraver, and actor. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was a leading publisher and printseller based in London, England. Print is very clean and intact with vibrant colors. Very minimal age-toning. A very small pin-sized or thumbtack-sized hole in upper-left corner of print.
