He had a player named Jim Thorpe with such raw talent that he formulated an offense that was later called the 'Single-Wing'. Prior to the 1950's, most colleges ran this offense until the advent of the T-formation late in the 1940's. The Pittsburg Steelers gave up the single-wing for the T-formation in 1952. But the single-wing is not completely dead. It is still run by a small group of teams across the country, mostly at the high school level. Before Stephen Ragsdale and the Giles Spartans, there was his dad Harry Ragsdale (The Coach) running the Single-Wing offense back in 1931 at the other Giles County school, Narrows High School. The Green Wave compiled five unbeaten seasons under Harry, including a 28-0 record in his last three years on the job from 1960-62. Coach Stephen C. Ragsdale (Coach Stevens) was named the head football coach for the Spartans of Giles High School in 1978. His only experience with football was hanging around the football field as a kid with his dad and watching and learning about the Single-Wing offense his dad hung on to, from the old days. Could and would Coach Ragsdale dare install his dad's offense at Giles? Could he expect success from a formation that even the Steelers gave up on more than a quarter of a century ago? Giles was not a football school. In fact, they had only had a couple of winning seasons in the schools nearly 20 years of existence. He dug in his cleats, determined to turn losers into winners, and at least develop some pride in a school and community, deep in the Appalachian Mountains, that was long overdue. SIEGFRIED SASSOON, the author of Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, writes on Horses and Hunting. A. F. CYNTHIA ASQUITH speaks of High Horse, the pony whom Granny rode when she was a little girl. LIONEL EDWARDS remembers the days when he was a poor student in London and bought his first horse for the sake of his health. LAURIAN JONES introduces Jim, her chestnut Welsh pony, with a strong will of his own, and VIC OLIVER confides how he became a racehorse owner when he bought Heart, a bay gelding, who, to quote his proud owner, 'had the meekness of a lamb, and the courage of a lion.' Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1888 Rho, 16 years of age, leaves the beautiful Ohio River farm of her parents, after marrying one of her dad's workers, Jacob, to go live and love on an Appalachian Mountaintop in what would later be the coalfields of Buchanan County of Southwest Virginia. Rho learned to identify and appreciate the value of herbs and the art of a midwife, by her grandmother in the mountains of West Virginia, and she soon became a legend in the coalfields. How could Della, Rho's granddaughter, and now the sole owner of Jake's Mountain protect her Granny's legacy, and more importantly Jake's Mountain from the unscrupulous coal barons that would move mountains to get to the black diamond underneath? Della only wanted the peace and security of the Appalachian Mountains she had learned to love while growing up as a child, spending the summers with her Granny Rho on Jake's Mountain. After the tragic deaths of her mother and Granny Rho in the coalfields of Buchanan County, she immersed herself in work and education to become a high ranking Environmental Protection Agency official. What could possibly keep Della from selling out and running from the coalfields of Buchanan County forever? Saving it was probably impossible. She doubted if the basketball star and gas-well driller, Russell Casey, was any less of an environmental polluter, but she was drawn back again to give him a chance and to try to find the killer of her legendary, and dear, Granny Rho. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Why would anyone born into the dirty, steep mountains, and deep dark hollows of the coal fields of the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia, NOT want to leave? Alma Woodson was born and grew up in Buchanan County of Southwest Virginia in a small coal mining community called Oakwood, Virginia. She did spend her teenage years waiting for the day she could escape. After graduating from Garden High School, she did exactly that, and she and her sister Janice moved to Washington D.C. where she discovered the thrill and convenience of the big cities. Working in politics brought her into contact with powerful and influential people, including presidents. Years later, her parents died, after living decades on a hillside farm along the banks of Little Garden Creek, in a deep hollow where the winter sun didn't shine. To Alma, it reminded her of a grave itself. With her father's passing, she finds herself, being the oldest sibling, named executor of the estate. She has to give up her world travels to return to Buchanan County, temporarily, to settle the estate. There, she discovers in his files, mysteries and stories that has to be investigated, including why Oakwood used to be called Hanger, Virginia. Her younger sister Krista tries to convince her to retire and move back home and 'rediscover her roots'. Can Alma abandon the glamorous and convenient life of the Nation's capital and move back to the coalfields of Hanger? This item is printed on demand.
