Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde in Österreich eine Kommission geschaffen, die über `militärische Pflichtverletzungen` in der ehemaligen k. u. k. Armee zu befinden hatte. Heute würde man manche davon als Kriegsverbrechen bezeichnen. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht das Verfahren gegen den späteren Nobelpreisträger Julius Wagner-Jauregg. Der berühmte Arzt hatte sich wegen brutaler Übergriffe an seiner Klinik bei der Faradisierung, der elektrotherapeutischen Behandlung von sogenannten Kriegsneurotikern zu verantworten. Sigmund Freud verfaßsste ein Gutachten über die Elektrotherapie und sagte als Sachverständiger vor der Kommission aus. Dabei kam es zu einer grundsätzlichen Auseinandersetzung zwischen traditioneller Psychiatrie und Psychoanalyse, die hier ausführlich dargestellt und kommentiert wird. Eine Therapie, die den Patienten normalisieren und eine, die ihn verstehen will, standen einander gegenüber. Im Grunde aber mehr: zwei Auffassungen vom Menschen.
