Soft Covers. Condizione: NF. No Jacket. Norman Heke (illustratore). 1st. Sub-titled "The Eternal Thread -- Te Aho Mutunga Kore" this impressive publication embraces the art of Maori weaving and plaiting, which is described as "being a precious gift from our ancestors, that is maintained, nourished and enriched by Maori weavers today." and that ".our beautiful creations of art and culture are still fashioned today from nature's offerings." The book covers the two divisions of The Eternal Thread --- Whatu, Maori Weaving and Raranga, Maori Plaiting. Text material covers its history, origins, patterns/designs, evolution, materials used and working methods. The project to produce the book was initiated by the National Maori Weavers Collective (Te Ropu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa) with ancient legends gathered into the background for the modern day weaving and plaiting. The exquisite work of 35 leading wavers/plaiters is displayed throughout the book through the medium of Norman Heke's equally beautiful colour photographs. About 70 examples are featured in close-up on full page plates, with the complete article illustrated in a smaller photo on the facing page which also carries a description of the subject. An invaluable acknowlegement of the skills, dedication and application of those who keep this ancient art flourishing. First edition of 2005 from Huia Publishers with assistance from Toi Maori Aotearoa and Te Waka Toi, 176 pages including glossary and further reading list, illustrated throughout with colour photographs. Colour pictorial card covers with flaps front and back are NF, text block also NF, no inscriptions.
