Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. First Paperback Printing. 317 pp. Ace Book 24970. Light edge and corner wear with a faintly creased spine; no interior markings. Medgar Evers, a tireless civil rights activist in Mississippi, was murdered in 1963 by a Ku Klux Klan killer. About For Us the Living, the New York Times wrote: "Mrs Evers, who wrote this book with William Peters. could have presented an emotional, slick history of the life and death of her husband, and she would have been congratulated, but, like her husband, she chose to do a thorough job. She has written a book that is at the same time a beautiful story of the love between a man and a woman (this itself should be educational for white Americans who cannot believe that Negroes have human emotions); a textbook on how it was to be not white in Mississippi, and a self-searching essay on how to be a normal human being married to a man devoted to freedom. For Mrs. Evers shows us a normal human being who gets tired and lonely, who sometimes wants to take a vacation from the struggle and devote full time to ironing and cooking and raising a family, but who learns, through being married to someone like Medgar Evers, to transcend herself.". Book.

Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: near fine. Later printing. Octavo, 378pp. A fine, crisp copy in a near fine dust jacket with mild edgewear. A significant association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Mrs. Evers on the half-title page to Eugene McCarthy: "To Senator Eugene McCarthy -- with admiration, deep respect -- with sincere thanks for your efforts in my Congressional Campaign. Myrlie Evers. September 11, 1970." Evers, who was the widow of assassinated Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers, was in the middle of an unsuccessful bid for a Congressional seat when she wrote this inscription. McCarthy had been the banner candidate of the left wing of the Democratic Party during the hotly contested 1968 Presidential Primary (Johnson was not seeking re-election due to the turmoil in Vietnam). McCarthy's candidacy lost steam after Bobby Kennedy entered the race, and did not regain momentum after Kennedy's assassination. A meaningful association copy.
