Hardcover. Thirteen pages early in the text show LIGHT PENCIL UNDERLINING AND MARGINALIA. Else, Very Near Fine: shows only a small, clearly stray pencil mark at the top edge of the text block and light dusting ot same; the last few pages - mainly the index -are a bit rumpled at the top edge; else flawless; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, or labels. Clearly a flawed copy, but nevertheless nearly--new, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing a couple of unobtrusive cosmetic flaws - and of course the pencil work. Bright and Clean. Corners Sharp. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (9.25 x 6.25 x 1.65 inches). xv, 422 pages. Language: English. Weight: 30.9 ounces. Reprint Edition (1968). First published in 1934. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. Robert Newton Flew (1886 1962) was an English Methodist minister and theologian, and an advocate of ecumenism among the Christian churches. Flew married in July 1921 Winifred Garrard (1887 1982), a Wesleyan Methodist teacher their son Antony Garrard Newton Flew (1923 2010) was to become a prominent philosopher.[5] He spent the next six years in a circuit ministry in London, where he built up strong ecumenical relations. His friendship with the Austrian Catholic theologian Baron von Hügel led him to closer study of spirituality, resulting in a book, The Idea of Perfection in Christian Theology (1934), which remained in print for many years. For this he was awarded a doctorate of divinity by the University of Oxford, the first ever for a non-Anglican. a comprehensive interpretation of Christian ethics as promulgated by Jesus, right on down through those whom Flew subsequently identifies as the most significant Christian thinkers of the last two thousand years."[7] It shows Flew to be one of several Methodist theologians in the mid-20th century to have become critical of the ideas of John Wesley on sinlessness and purity of intention: "Flew critiques Wesley's attitude to sin as offering only an inadequate account of moral evil," so that he can "posit an over-optimistic instantaneous end to the effects of sin. The result of these problems is an 'intramundane asceticism', whereby the one assured of sanctification merely endures secular life, allowing a barrier to exist between one's work and worship".The Idea of Perfection in Christian Theology (1934) is a meticulous piece of scholarship on a theme dear to Methodist hearts. Reprint Edition (1968). First published in 1934.
