Descrizione: V. Baldini, Ferrara, 1587. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 4to, pp. [8], 227, [1, errata], with woodcut device on title and woodcut diagrams in the text; occasional light dampstaining, but a very attractive copy in early vellum. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF FRANCESCO PATRIZI'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE CONCEPT OF 'SPACE'. Patrizi s importance in the history of science rests primarily on his highly original views concerning the nature of space, which have striking similarities to those later developed by Henry More and Isaac Newton. His position was first set out in De rerum naturae libri II priores, alter de spacio physico, alter de spacio mathematico (Ferrara, 1587) Rejecting the Aristotelian doctrines of horror vacui and of determinate "place," Patrizi argued that the physical existence of a void is possible and that space is a necessary precondition of all that exists in it. Space, for Patrizi, was "merely the simple capacity (aptitudo) for receiving bodies, and nothing else." It was no longer a category, as it was for Aristotle, but an indeterminate receptacle of infinite extent. His distinction between "mathematical" and "physical" space points the way toward later philosophical and scientific theories. The primacy of space (spazio) in Patrizi s system is also seen in his Della nuova geometria (Ferrara, 1587), the essence of which was later incorporated into the Nova de universis philosophia. In it Patrizi attempted to found a system of geometry in which space was a fundamental, undefined concept that entered into the basic definitions (point, line, angle) of the system. The full impact of Patrizi s works on later thought has yet to be evaluated (DSB). Patrizi s works seem to have been widely known throughout Europe and directly influenced some of the Cambridge Platonists, notably Joseph Glanville and Henry More. Henry More can be seen as a link between Patrizi and Sir Isaac Newton. Patrizi s long arguments for an isotropic, unchanging, immobile and infinite space, his vehement denunciation of the Aristotelian concept, and his establishment of space as a new philosophical term can finally be said to have taken root when Newton was able to discuss absolute space after writing: I do not define space as being well known to all " (John Christopher Henry, Francesco Patrizi and the concept of space , doctoral thesis, University of Leeds, 1977, pp. 167-168). Patrizi studied at Ingolstadt, at the University of Padua (1547-1554), and at Venice. While in the service of various noblemen in Rome and Venice he made several trips to the East, where he perfected his knowledge of Greek, and to Spain. He lived for a time at Modena and at Ferrara, before being appointed to a personal chair of Platonic philosophy at the University of Ferrara by Duke Alfonso II d Este in 1578. He remained there until 1592, when Pope Clement VIII summoned him to a similar professorship in Rome, a post he held until his death. Poggendorff II, col. 374; Riccardi I 254; Sommerville p. 3; STC Italian p. 493; not in Adams; OCLC records eight US locations, at Chicago, Columbia, Wisconsin, Burndy, Michigan, Illinois, Temple, and Cornell, and a copy at the Fisher Library, Toronto. Descrizione: Vittorio Baldini, Ferrara, 1587. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF FRANCESCO PATRIZI'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE CONCEPT OF 'SPACE'. Descrizione: Aldus, Venice, 1545. Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. ON THE ESSENCE OF HUMANISM FIRST EDITION thus. 8vo. ff. 278 (iv). Italic letter. Woodcut Aldine device to title page and verso of last, capital spaces with guide letters. Light age yellowing, blank outer margins of D3 and D4 re-margined (before printing). A very good copy, crisp and clean, in C18th Italian half calf over patterned paper boards, some worming to covers, all edges red. First edition of Patrizi s Discorsi translated from the Latin by Giovanni Fabrini. A selection of "discourses", divided into nine books, the work covers a wide range of subjects including the principles of statecraft, the meaning of life (particularly the nature of virtue, health, honest pleasures and wealth), literature and the law. Patrizi, detached from the reigning debate that focused on the difficult relationships between the Church and the Empire, proposed a society based on the humanistic conception of autonomous man, freed from the ties of hierarchical power. Francesco Patrizi (1413-1492) writer, politician and humanist, was appointed bishop of Gaeta by Pope Pio II in 1460. Involved in the Sienese conspiracy in 1456, he was forced into exile in Verona, where he came into contact with various humanists, including the circle of Antonio Brognanigo. He wrote in Latin, being translated into Italian only 40 years later, by Aldus. The present work, in the Tuscan vernacular edited by the humanist Giovanni Fabrini, was widely read and won acclaim for its social and political realism in its discussion of new humanistic ideas. He is also known for his influential political tracts, De institutione reipublicae (1518) and De regno et regis institutione (1519). His other humanist works, largely unpublished, include epitomes, treatises on philosophy, letter-writing, collections of Latin poems and epigrams, diplomatic orations, and a history of Siena. He also wrote important early vernacular commentaries on Petrarch s Canzoniere and Trionfi. A very good copy. BM STC It. p. 493. Adams P 443. Renouard 131:3. Ahmanson-Murphy Collection, 292. Italian. Descrizione: Ferrara, Domenico Mamarelli, 1583., 1583. 4to. (6), 92 ff. With armorial title woodcut, 12 folding engraved plates and several woodcut initials. Contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title to bottom edge. First edition. - A major study on the ancient Roman army, based on the author's reading of Polybius, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Patrizi posits that the art of warfare is the basis of peace and human happiness. His benchmark are the Romans, whose army he views as superior to all others - in particular that of the Ottomans: if the Christian armies could only emulate the military forces of ancient Rome, he writes, they need not fear the Turks. The only modern army to come close to this ideal, he feels, was that of Duke Alfonso I d'Este gelungen, whose methods of fortification and siegecraft were exemplary. It is therefore perhaps little surprise that Patrizi dedicates his work to Alfonso II d'Este, the ruler of Ferrara and the grandson of Alfonso I. The engravings show military formations and camps, individual legionaries, attack formations, etc. - Binding repaired with modern endpapers. A good copy with very insignificant traces of worming to the title and the final two leaves, as well as a few repaired edge defects. BM-STC Italian 493. Adams P 437. Edit 16, CNCE 47279. Graesse V, 169. Not in Jähns or Cockle; not in Göllner. Codice articolo 50481
