The bottom and top of the spine are scuffs and show small chips. Small chips also throughout the back cover. Interior with signs of wear but overall in good condition.; Catalogue of an exhibition shown in Asia House Gallery in the fall of 1976.; This first broad study of Southeast Asian ceramics presents examples of all the most important types of wares created by Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese potters between the ninth and the seventeenth centuries. Ranging from the subdued green and brown monochromes of the Khmers to Vietnamese stonewares decorated in vivid polychrome overglaze enamels, these pieces testify to the sophistication and variety of the potter's art in mainland Southeast Asia. Some, such as the blue-and-white wares of Viet Nam or the celadons of the Sawankhalok kilns in Thailand reflect the influence of Chinese prototypes, but indigenous potters also developed their own wide repertoire of ceramic shapes, glazes, and styles of decoration. The popularity of these wares extended far beyond the communities in which they were made. Many ceramics were created for distant foreign markets and large quantities of Thai and Vietnamese pottery, including some of the finest known specimens, have been excavated in Indonesia and the Philippines. They were carried there centuries ago by Indian, Chinese, and perhaps even Middle Eastern traders. Dean Frasche was first exposed to the fascination of Asian ceramics in 1937. From that time the acquisition and study of "pots" became his consuming interest and during the extended periods he spent in mining explorations in Southeast Asia, from 1944 to 1971, he examined many kiln sites. More than one hundred examples from twenty- eight collections in Asia, Europe, and America are illustrated in this volume, which also includes brief histories of the Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese peoples, information about the clays, glazes, and methods of manufacture used, descriptive notes pertaining to the objects, maps, and an extensive bibliography.
