Prioritizing the debate on improving methods used by various agencies, this book compiles presentations, comments, and discussions stemming from a conference on the same topic. The conference provided an initial step towards creating a consensus approach to valuing improvements in food safety. The concept of a statistical life is fundamental to the discussion, as well as the examination of relevant literature that estimates the value of statistical life. The author explores the differences between valuing health endpoints versus valuing specific reductions in exposure. The book considers the limitations of current valuation approaches and the development of more appropriate measures. It also presents challenges associated with transferring statistical measures derived from studies where the magnitude of the risk reduction is stated explicitly to situations where the magnitude of the risk is uncertain. Overall, this book provides valuable insights into the complexities of valuing the health benefits of food safety and offers practical guidance for improving current practices. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This report explores the structure and function of the U.S. nutrition research system, with an emphasis on trends in Federal support. It describes how nutrition research is used, especially for nutrition education and communication, but also for regulation and food assistance. The report uses the Human Nutrition Research Information Management database maintained by the National Institutes of Health to analyze longterm trends. Federal investments in nutrition research grew from 1985 to 2009 in real terms, but the portfolio of research changed. Over time, the share of nutrition research support by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services increased while support by the U.S. Department of Agriculture decreased. This shift changed how research topics were selected and funded within the Federal portfolio. More research is funded through competitive grants than through intramural or formula funding, and a broader set of academic institutions now participates in nutrition research.
