A work unique in Latin literature, being a short 'commentarius' on the water-supply system of Rome written c100AD by senator holding the important position of 'Curator Aquarum' for the city; with a full commentary on the text by Giovanni Poleni, hydaulic engineer for the Venetian Republic. pp(2)/(8),32,296,(2),(2)/(2) including single blank preliminary & final leaves. With title-page device, head- & tailpieces and decorated initial capitals, in-text map extending over upper parts of pages 128 & 129, device with imprimatur "Impress. Typis Seminarii Patavini" on recto of penultimate leaf, and 15 engraved plates comprising medallion portrait, facsimile, tables, chronology, architectural drawings, and maps & plans. Red speckled edges. Original full speckled calf neatly re-backed & -cornered in hide, layered over which most of original spine and sizeable amounts of corner coverings. Hinges at original marbled endpapers reinforced with neatly applied strips of compatibly coloured pale green fabric. Replacement headbands. Original spine layer (with five raised bands, gilt decorations, and gilt abbreviated title on original dark maroon leather label) rubbed, trimmed with a little loss at head & foot and adjacent to hinges, and with some loss of hide over lowest raised band. Boards lightly rubbed, with a little darkening of original hide towards edges and outer corners; original hide of front board with a number of short closed surface cracks, and a few spots of surface loss towards upper outer corner and to lesser extent at fore-edge. Board edges rubbed, with loss of much of original gilt decoration; small shallow bump and associated loss of hide at upper edge of front board, 1.8cm-long open tear of hide at upper edge of rear. Endpapers rubbed and a little faded, with loss of width up to 2cm along 3.5cm of inner edge of rear pastedown and a little loss at outer corners of both front and rear pastedowns; slight loss along lower edges of front flyleaf and following preliminary leaf. Initials of some age in broad blue pencil crayon on blank side of front flyleaf; short ink inscription of considerable age on blank side of rear flyleaf, together with initialled pencil inscription "Collated & complete / pp B. Quaritch Ltd". Preliminary and final leaves a little spotted, lightly toned and faintly dust-marked towards edges; recto of preliminary leaf with pasted-down cutting (1.5x8cm) concerning this title from a bookseller's catalogue of some age. Title-page lightly & sparsely spotted, a little dust-marked, and with meniscus-shaped tan stain of height up to 0.4cm along 1cm of lower edge. Some light spotting throughout contents, nothing too disfiguring, and occasional minor handling-marks. A number of lightly creased and/or bumped upper outer corners, occasional creased corners and a few creased and/or furled and/or dust-marked corner tips elsewheres; confined to margins in all cases, effects minimal. Top edge of text-block unevenly darkened. Binding holding firmly and of pleasing appearance. Contents generally clean and tight; text with generous margins, full complement of plates. VERY GOOD copy.
