Ma i duchi di Savoia non accettarono la decisione e nel 1613 Carlo Emanuele I, per rivendicare le ragioni dinastiche, scatenò una guerra che presto assunse dimensioni europee. Il duca si impadronì di quasi tutto il Monferrato, esclusa l'importante cittadella di Casale. Iniziò così la prima Guerra del Monferrato, combattuta tra il 1613 e il 1617. Molto meno nota della Seconda Guerra del Monferrato (1627-1630), questa prima crisi monferrina costituì uno dei principali eventi che anticiparono la Guerra dei Trent'anni, che coinvolse l'Europa dal 1618 al 1648.
