Shakespeare gehört zu den bedeutendsten und am meisten aufgeführten und verfilmten Dramatikern der Weltliteratur. Er schrieb etwa 38 Dramen und Versdichtungen, darunter eine Sammlung mit Sonetten. . Rezeption in Deutschland: In Deutschland hat die Shakespeare-Rezeption eine wechselvolle Geschichte, in der der Dichter für die verschiedensten Interessen in Dienst genommen wurde. Von großer Bedeutung war Shakespeare für die Literaturtheorie der Aufklärung bei Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (im 17. Literaturbrief 1759), für die Dramatiker des Sturm und Drang etwa bei Heinrich Wilhelm von Gerstenberg (Briefe über Merckwürdigkeiten der Litteratur, 1766/67), bei Johann Gottfried Herder (Von deutscher Art und Kunst, 1773) und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Rede zum Shäkespears Tag, 1771); jedoch ebenso für die deutsche Romantik und die Dramentheorie des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der im frühen 18. Jahrhundert einflussreiche Theoretiker Johann Christoph Gottsched, der dem französischen Klassizismus des 17. Jahrhunderts verpflichtet war und der sich so an der den drei Aristotelischen Einheiten entsprechenden französischen Dramatik orientierte, äußerte sich noch, wie Voltaire vor ihm, recht abfällig über Shakespeare. In der zweiten Jahrhunderthälfte aber wurde Shakespeare für die Dramentheoretiker der Spätaufklärung und des Sturm und Drang zum Prototyp des Genies. Es gehört zu den Topoi der deutschen Shakespeare-Rezeption seit der Romantik, dass die Deutschen eine besondere Affinität zu Shakespeare hätten. Im Zuge des deutschen Chauvinismus des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts wurde Shakespeare sogar als der dritte deutsche Klassiker" neben Goethe und Schiller beansprucht (Wilhelm Jordan). Die Beschäftigung mit Shakespeare und die Popularisierung seines Werkes fand in der Deutschen Shakespeare-Gesellschaft, die im Jahr 1864 gegründet wurde, ihre institutionelle Verankerung. Unübersehbar ist die Zahl der (oft eigens für einzelne Inszenierungen angefertigter) Eindeutschungen Shakespeares seit über 250 Jahren. Bekannte Übertragungen der Dramen sind die Ausgaben Christoph Martin Wielands, Eduard Wilhelm Sievers', diejenige von Johann Heinrich Voß und seiner Söhne Heinrich Voß und Abraham Voß, die Schlegel-Tieck-Ausgabe (August Wilhelm Schlegel, Wolf von Baudissin, Ludwig Tieck und Dorothea Tieck) sowie in neuerer Zeit die Übersetzungen von Erich Fried und Frank Günther. Neuere Übersetzungen, die Aufsehen erregten, waren z. B. die Übertragungen einiger Schauspiele durch Thomas Brasch und Peter Handke.
