"William Strickland (1788-1854), was a noted architect in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Nashville, Tennessee. A student of Benjamin Latrobe and mentor to Thomas Ustick Walter, Strickland was one of the founders of the Greek Revival movement in the United States. Strickland was also a civil engineer and one of the first to advocate the use of steam locomotives on railways. Some argue that Strickland's observations made during visits to England in the 1820s were highly influential in the transfer of railway technology to the United States: "His reports are the starting point of American railway engineering, and represent the state of knowledge as the first railways were being planned." Hardcover. Reprint Edition. Light green cloth boards with black lettering; brown DJ with green lettering and illustration; 312 pp.; illustrations. "William Strickland -- architect, engineer, engraver -- was an outstanding exponent of the Greek Revival in America. A disciple of Benjamin H. Latrobe, one of the originators of the movement, Strickland learned early to discipline his taste to the severe harmonies of Grecian architecture. As he matured, he became more and more of an artistic purist -- a fact illustrated by the contrast between his first building, the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia, and his later, coldly severe Customs House, which is still standing in that city." -- DJ. Good (Boards are edgeworn/scuffed/smudged/discolored.; textblock edges are edgeworn/scuffed/smudged; interior is clean; binding is solid.) Good- (Dj is edgeworn/scuffed/smudged.).
