Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Rough Breathing makes available a broad selection (much of it never before in print, or published in fugitive journals) from over three decades of Harry Gilonis's doggedly, cheerfully making his own luck. His poems insist on their quiddity at their moment of making; there is everything here from plain-speaking love-lyric to collaged transcriptions of British bird-song; from work rooted in unfamiliar landscapes to work written out of the innards of the language. Alert (without nostalgia) to the British Poetry Revival, cognisant of l=a=n=g=u=a=g=e, his poems are aware of their shape on the page, the sound they make as they go by the ear, and will stop at nothing to be themselves as fully and as openly as possible. The versatility and range of Rough Breathing, its use of processes both transparent and opaque, makes it - beyond a fine collection - a radical pattern-book to challenge workshops and creative seminars. Translation is stirred, or folded, into the creative mix. `I would hope readers might be surprised by what the poems do; and, sometimes at least, find that they will do a different thing, next time round' (Harry Gilonis). A substantial selection drawn from thirty years of procedurally and formally inventive writing. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. For over three decades Harry Gilonis's poetry has milled cheerfully in the literary avant-garde: Rough Breathing is the first substantial gathering of his poems. Most previously appeared in small-press publications or little magazines on both sides of the Atlantic; some are published here for the first time. Gilonis's work has a light, lucid beauty underpinned by formal and procedural invention, with lyrics written from love and landscape as well as poems made from the innards of language. There is collaged bird-song, experimental versioning from the ancient Chinese and text written by a 'bot'. Borders between 'original' and 'translation' are straddled, or blurred, in intriguing and innovative ways. Objectivist after the fact, party without nostalgia to the British Poetry Revival, cognisant of L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E, Gilonis's poems are aware of their shape on the page and the sound they make as they go past the ear. They insist on being themselves as fully and openly as possible. The versatility and range of Rough Breathing, its use of processes, transparent or opaque, make it - besides being a fine collection - a radical pattern-book to challenge teachers and students alike. An Introduction by Philip Terry offers biographical and critical context. 'What becomes increasingly clear as one reads,' Terry writes, 'is that this is a body of work of the highest ambition, and highest order.'.

First edition [CID CORMAN] From the private library of fthe poet, scholar and editor and translator Cid Corman of Kyoto, Japan. Cid Corman was the editor and publisher of the seminal journal Origin and his press that produced Origin books which were often associated as well with James Weil and The Elizabeth Press in New Rochelle, New York. Cid always read his books with a pen in hand and with an eye as poet and editor. He would annotate often books and his reading either briefly with comments and marginalia or extensively, depending on the book, the subject, and even Cid's personal attachment to a given author, subject or even book. In many cases, Cid could have been involved with a particular author or even the publisher, and his many comments would adjust to that situation. In any case, with all books from Cid Corman's library, they were active and circulating. Gilonis was always close to Cid's eye following the poet's work. As usual fully signed by Cid Corman with date. This issued was gifted via Billy Mills the Irish poet. Limited to only 120 copies. Cid has lightly annotated his way through his reading here. Close to fine stapled wraps.

"Michael Finnissy's Reels, despite their title, are not, formally, reels, but make use of elements of pibroch ornamentation; my reels, in parallel, don't refer to pibroch, but do make structural use of some portions of my poem 'pibroch' (which does use pibroch technique).".
