According to the English preface, the translation was made from the 20th edition by Tsutomu INOUE, a crucial figure in Meiji-era translations. Only the first part of the novel was translated; nevertheless, the present book is complete and is the first translation. The illustrations were made by Kishida GINKO (1833-1905), more famous as a war journalist in Taiwan.
