Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin (Badenweiler 1760 - Roma 1820) fu disegnatore, pittore, incisore ed instancabile viaggiatore alla continua ricerca di nuovi ispirazioni e spunti artistici. La sua attivit? si colloca perlopi? a Roma, dove riprodusse a bulino ed acquaforte disegni di Humboldt, Lorrain e Poussin. E' celebre anche la sua ultima fatica, le 24 illustrazioni per l'edizione dell'Eneide nella traduzione di Annibal Caro del 1819.
