Off-white text pages, untrimmed right and lower page block. 144 p., [7] leaves of B&W photo plates: 21 cm. First elected Governor of New Hampshire in 1936, Francis P Murphy was an energetic, problem-solving administrator with a high school education who had become self-educated in the shoe-making industry of Newport, NH, rising from entry level positions to manager of the McElwain Shoe Company efforts in Newport and other cities. This biographical volume sings his praises through interviews with others and based on his records of achievement with people, his love of baseball, his family, the challenges of post-World War I, and the Depression era, and his own words. A Republican and a Catholic who spoke out against religious bigotry, he consistently won the popular vote in an era when the Presidential votes were going for the Democrat FDR. Significantly, he had become the largest employer of labor in the state during his career. Sent from Newport NH. Very good. No dust jacket.
