In »Strange Beauty« behandelt Cynthia Hahn Themen, die die Klasse der mittelalterlichen Reliquienschreine als Ganzes betreffen. Sie befasst sich insbesondere mit tragbaren Reliquienschreinen, die oft winzige Reliquienfragmente enthielten, die es den Heiligen angeblich ermöglichten, aktiv Macht in der Welt auszuüben. Reliquienschreine, so Hahn, sind vor allem eine Form der Repräsentation. Sie bilden selten einfach ab, was sie enthalten, sondern bereiten den Betrachter auf die angemessene Rezeption ihres kostbaren Inhalts vor und begründen die »Geschichte« der Reliquien.
