Libro
Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1964, ix, 241pp, index, frontispiece. Printed wrps. Marginal notes and underlining on the first 12 pages, else VG. Claude G. Bowers, (1878 - 1958), born in Westfield, Indiana, was an orator, editor, politician, historian, and diplomat and one of the most influential Hoosiers in the first part of the 20th century. He attended High School No. 1, otherwise known as the Indianapolis High School, (later to be renamed in honor of Ex-Superintendent Abram C. Shortridge), during the period 1894 to 1898. The diaries, published here for the first time, cover the periods July 3, 1895 through August 31, 1896, and from September 24, 1897 through January 19, 1899, and reveal a very bright teenager, interested in Shakespeare, Shelley, Byron, Tennyson, and Whitman, but also interested in many prominent politicians of the day. "The person who comes through in the pages is an able, intelligent, impressionable youth who delighted in the zest and sparkle of the Gay Nineties despite his own personal poverty and the drabness of his home. From start to finish, either his absorption in politics or his keen interest in public speaking or his dogged intellectual industry or his knack in the art of pen portraiture is remarkable to behold in a person so young.".
