Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. vi+130 pages with frontispiece, diagrams, tables, photographs and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. (Betts: 189) First edition. In the winter of 1948, when it came to the attention of the Manhattan Chess Club that four top chess masters would be spending December in New York, a tournament was put together on short notice. The four masters in question were former world champion Max Euwe, American chess master Reuben Fine, challenger of the world crown Miguel Najdorf, and Swedish champion Gideon Ståhlberg. Manhattan Chess Club vice-president Sidney F. Kenton raised $5800 in prize money to lure the players, as well as organizing the event. Ståhlberg was not staying in New York long enough to participate, so he declined. His invitation went next to Samuel Reshevsky, who also declined. Argentinian chess master Herman Pilnik found out about the tournament from Najdorf and offered to fill the empty seat if he were extended an invitation. It was granted and the remaining seats went to American players: Arthur Bisguier, Arnold Denker, Israel Horowitz, Isaac Kashdan, George Kramer, and Herman Steiner. Each player received $250 for attending. The tournament was played from December 23rd, 1948 to January 2nd, 1949, allowing only two rest days, neither of which were holidays. The time control for the event was 40 moves in two hours followed by 20 moves every hour afterwards. Fine won first prize of $1000 for his amazing 8/9 finish. He overcame the tournament leader Najdorf in their round seven game by defeating him, thus leaving Najdorf with the eventual second place prize of $750. Pilnik and Euwe split the combined third and fourth place prize of $750. Although he had declined to participate in the world championship tournament earlier in the year, and would retire from chess in a few more years, Fine displayed in this tournament that he was still one of the world's very best players, and one the best talents America had ever produced. Condition: Corners bumped, spine ends moderately rubbed, small stain to back cover else a very good copy.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 95 pages with diagrams, photographs and tables. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 4 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5669) first edition. In the wake of the World War, the chess club at Hastings reorganized their year-end congress to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hastings (1895). The master section was also intended as a warm-up for London A (1946) and London B (1946). The Russians had been invited, but did not turn up. The World Champion Alexander Alekhine was not invited (due to alleged Nazi sympathies), while the Czechoslovak champion Karel Opocensky arrived two days late. There was no play scheduled on Sundays, and no double rounds. Euwe-Sergeant was played on Sunday, January 6, as Euwe during rounds 6 and 7 went to see his sister who was coming home after four years as a prisoner in a Japanese internment camp in Java. Controller of play was Arthur John Mackenzie. The unknown Swede Ekström made an outstanding run with 9/11, but the loss to Tartakower in round 5 was decisive. Some reporters thought that Tartakower now had captured the world crown, but this picture soon changed. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, spine ends rubbed else a very good.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 151+[1 ad] pages with frontispiece portrait and diagrams. Royal octavo (8 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth. Biography by Jacques Hannak. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 3262). First edition. Akiba Kiwelowicz Rubinstein (1880-1961) was a Polish chess player. He is considered to have been one of the greatest players never to have become World Chess Champion. Between 1907 and 1912, Rubinstein established himself as one of the strongest players in the world. In 1907, he won the Carlsbad tournament and the All-Russian Masters' tournament, and shared first at Saint Petersburg. In 1912 he had a record string of wins, finishing first in five consecutive major tournaments: San Sebastián, Pöstyén, Breslau, Warsaw and Vilna (All-Russian Masters' tournament), although none of these events included Lasker or Capablanca. Some sources believe that he was stronger than World Champion Emanuel Lasker at this time. Rubinstein's peak as a player is generally considered to have been between 1907 and 1914. Rubinstein won at Vienna in 1922, ahead of future World Champion Alexander Alekhine, and was the leader of the Polish team that won the 1930 Chess Olympiad at Hamburg with a record of thirteen wins and four draws. He also won an Olympic silver at the 1931 Chess Olympiad, again leading the Polish team. Rubinstein came in fourth place in the London 1922 tournament, after which new world champion Jose Raul Capablanca offered to play him in a match if he could raise the money, which once again he was unable to do. At Hastings 1922, he came in second place, followed by a fifth-place finish at Teplitz-Schönau late in the year, and then won in Vienna brilliantly. This triumph, however, was soured when Austrian border guards impounded most of the prize money he had won. Rubinstein closed out 1922 with another appearance at Hastings, which he won, but his tournament record during 1923 was disappointing as he came in just twelfth place at Carlsbad and tenth at Maehrisch-Ostrau. His first tournament of 1924, at Meran, saw him come in third. He attempted to participate in the New York tournament that spring but was excluded from the event due to a limited number of available slots, all of which were filled. Rubinstein's 1925 tournament record was reasonably good, but his year-end appearance in Moscow saw him come in 14th. His record in 1926 was fair but not outstanding. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed through, spine replaced, else about very good.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xvii+259 pages with diagrams, tables, plates and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Translated by Jimmy Adams. Caissa's World's greatest chess tournament, volume 1. (Lusis: 1457) First American edition. This is a translation of Mezhdunarondi Turnier v Blede by S O Weinstein and A A Smirnov (1934) which was limited to 5000 copies, itself a translation of the original German MS by Kmoch. This edition includes additional notes and analyses from other sources, an introductory article by Salo Flohr from 64, a concluding article from Neue Wiener Schachzeitung. Bled 1931 chess tournament was a major chess tournament proposed by Milan Vidmar and held in 1931 in Bled and Ljubljana, Slovenia, then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. His idea was well received in both Ljubljana (his birthplace) and the nearby health resort of Bled. An organizing committee was set up, and at the end of July 1931, following the 4th Chess Olympiad in Prague, this committee commissioned Hans Kmoch to conduct the negotiations with the competitors for a double round tournament to be held at Lake Bled. José Raúl Capablanca could not be invited due to his disputes with world champion Alexander Alekhine. Fourteen leading chess masters accepted their invitations. The players stayed at the Hotel Toplice and it was here that most of the tournament except Round 19 (held in Ljubljana) took place. Round one started in the large salon on August 23. Alekhine won decisively, not losing a single game and winning the tournament 5½ points ahead of Efim Bogoljubow. His gambit style was humiliating for the other players. Sole third was Aron Nimzowitsch, a clear point behind. Tied for fourth through seventh was the American, Isaac Kashdan, Milan Vidmar (Kingdom of Yugoslavia), Salo Flohr (Czechoslovakia) and Gösta Stoltz (Sweden) each a half point behind Nimzowitsch. Savielly Tartakower (Poland) took clear eight with a score of 13. Ninth and tenth was shared by Rudolf Spielmann (Austria) and Borislav Kosti¿ (Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Géza Maróczy (Hungary) captured sole eleventh. Edgar Colle (Belgium), Lajos Asztalos (Kingdom of Yugoslavia) and Vasja Pirc (Kingdom of Yugoslavia)rounded out the places twelve through fourteenth respectively. Corners bumped else near fine.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 1st Edition. viii+77 pages with table and diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") issued in stiff boards. (Vanderlinde Niemeijeriana:5589) First edition 1938 will go down in chess history as an outstanding year. It was ushered in by the traditional Invitation Masters Tournament sponsored by the Hastings and St. Leonard's Chess Club (England). In one of the strongest fields of recent years. United States Champion, Samuel Reshevsky, finished first, half a point ahead of C. H. O'D, Alexander (the British champion) and Paul Keres of Estonia. The center of interest then turned to the United States, which staged the biennial United States Chess Championship Tournament. Seventeen of the country's outstanding players battled for three weeks to determine the question of supremacy. The scene of action was the R.C.A. Building in New York City and Samuel Reshevsky repeated his fine performance of 1936 by retaining the title for another two years. Pressing him closely were Reuben Fine (who finished second. half a point behind), Albert C. Simonson (runner-up two years ago at the Hotel Astor), I. A. Horowitz (fourth), and I. Kashdan (fifth). Easter week was featured by the Margate Congress (England). Dr. Alexander Alekhine, the World Champion, took premier honors a full point ahead of Rudolf Spielman, the Austrian grandmaster. Chess interest focused on Holland during the month of June. This was occasioned by the Noordwijk International Masters Tournament in which Erich Eliskases of Austria scored a well-merited triumph a point ahead of Paul Keres of Estonia, two points ahead of V. Pirc of Yugoslavia, and in front of Holland's pride, Dr. Max Euwe, former World Champion. Condition: Some light pencil notations. Jacket lacking front fold over flap, corners, spine ends and edges chipped, tape and stains to extremities, 3" loss to spine center, soiled, otherwise a very good copy in a fair but incomplete scarce jacket.
