8vo [22 x 15 cm]; xii, 188 pp, frontis (portrait of Harcourt), 3 folding maps, including two which are reprinted from early sources, bibliography, index. original blue cloth with gilt vignette on front cover, gilt spine title lettering, light stains on lower cover, the scarce dust jacket has is chipped including large piece at bottom, name on endpaper, interior is clean and fine. Griffin 263: 'An account based on Harcourt's colonizing voyage to Guiana in 1608-1609, reprinted from the 1613 first edition, but includes the additions made by Harcourt in the second edition. Another appendix contains a report on the Marwin (Maroni) River sent to Harcourt in about 1612. The Relation is useful for its ethnography, natural history and scheme for colonization.' Cox ii, 256: 'A valuable supplement to Raleigh's narrative of 1596.' National Maritime Museum 299. Sabin 30297, referring to the 1613 and 1626 editions:' Both editions are very rare'. The detailed 48 page introduction includes the historical background, Harcourt's biography, details on maps, early settlements, geography, Harcourt's scheme of colonization, etc. A picture of this book is available on request.
