Soft cover, 47 pp. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Mary Norton Clapp Library Jan to Mar 1987 ; and of an art exhibition, "Jeffers Country", held at the Weingart Center for the Liberal Arts Jan. 5 to Feb. 6, 1987. Pages lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. [From Foreword by Tyrus G. Harmsen] January 10, 1987, marked the one hundredth anniversary of ?the birth of Robinson Jeffers. To commemorate the life and work of this California poet, Occidental College held a series of events in the fall of 1986 and the spring of 1987. These included a lecture series about Jeffers, a symposium of Jeffers scholars in January, a poetry reading, a travelling exhibition of Jeffers first editions, a dance interpretation, a comprehensive Library exhibition, and an art show. This catalog serves as a record of the 1987 exhibitions. It provides a brief outline of Jeffers' publications, some insight into his life as a poet, and notes of special resources for Jeffers studies. The nucleus of the Occidental College Library Jeffers collection was the gift in 1938 of Albert M. Bender. As a patron of the arts in San Francisco, and as a personal friend of Jeffers, he formed a fine group of first editions, letters, manuscripts, and photographs. In 1974 the Library received as a bequest from Theodore M. Lilienthal, another close friend of the Jeffers family, his Jeffers material. Other donors have included Lawrence Clark Powell, Ward Ritchie, the Jeffers family, and Melba Berry Bennett. For the scholar this is a comprehensive resource of first and later editions, foreign translations, manuscripts and letters, clippings, photographs, theses and dissertations, recordings, films, and books and articles in the field of criticism. Since Jeffers and the California seascape were so inextricably related, the College also held as a part of the centennial celebration an art exhibit entitled "Jeffers' Country" which was organized by Professor Linda Lyke of the Department of Art, Occidental College. A record of that exhibition is also included as a part of this catalog.
