En 2023 celebramos el quincuagésimo aniversario de la Universidad de Extremadura desde su creación allá por 1973; camino que hemos recorrido tras numerosos y notables éxitos y aciertos, aunque no exento de dificultades y errores. Celebrar esta onomástica nos llena de optimismo, alegría y satisfacción, porque nuestra universidad, surgida del profundo anhelo e intenso empeño que nuestra tierra ha tenido que dedicar hasta conseguir su creación, ha sido y es una institución de educación superior que ha tenido, y tiene, un impacto fundamental en el progreso social, económico y cultural de Extremadura. Todos podemos y debemos sentirnos orgullosos de la trayectoria y del alcance nacional e internacional que nuestra universidad ha conseguido en docencia, investigación, transferencia tecnológica y gestión en tan solo cincuenta años. Transmito desde aquí mi más profundo agradecimiento al personal docente e investigador, al personal técnico de gestión, administración y servicios y a nuestros estudiantes, destinatarios finales de nuestra labor. Nuestra historia nos enseña cómo el acceso de los extremeños a los estudios universitarios implicó, y necesitó, la total implicación de instituciones, autoridades y particulares que desde los distintos estamentos de la sociedad se esforzaron en conseguir que Extremadura dejara de ser la única región española sin estudios superiores. El 10 de mayo de 1973 se aprobaba el Decreto, publicado ocho días después en el Boletín Oficial del Estado, por el que se fundaba la Universidad de Extremadura. Se iniciaba una andadura que ha permitido a las generaciones que la vieron nacer y a sus descendientes, alcanzar una formación universitaria a través de una oferta académica multidisciplinar en la que sus titulaciones de grado, máster y doctorado han aumentado paralelamente al crecimiento cualitativo y cuantitativo de la institución. Este logro no sólo ha puesto a disposición de nuestros jóvenes la opción real de estudiar en nuestra Comunidad Autónoma, sino que ha tenido un papel muy relevante en que puedan acceder a un mercado laboral cada vez más especializado, anteriormente inalcanzable para muchos. No obstante, debemos seguir trabajando con intensidad y determinación para desarrollar herramientas e iniciativas que potencien la empleabilidad y el emprendimiento de nuestros egresados No es posible entender la Extremadura del siglo XXI sin la aportación de su Universidad, plenamente imbricada y comprometida en el progreso y el desarrollo de la región desde su nacimiento como Comunidad Autónoma en 1983, y con competencias en materia de educación superior transferidas a la Junta de Extremadura en 1995.
