Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This book is intact, complete, and easily read. PON to front pastedown. 1896 date to title page matches 1896 date to copyright page; no later dates or printings mentioned. The gilt titles are bright to both front and rear boards, though completely faded from the spine. This first edition would thus grade "good" save that the fore-edge of the front board -- and the bottom fore-edges of the first 100-odd pages -- look as though someone had held them to a grindstone, grinding them down by as much as 3/16ths inch. (No text is affected.) Since this is not known to be a common home workshop project, however, we conclude this work was done over a period of hours by some small furry book-lover with two sharp front teeth. As for the tale itself, it seems to turn on whether the heroine's true love, a clergyman, will marry her, since there is some appearance that her "birth may have been dishonest," presumably a euphemism of the day for . . . illegitimacy! Well, thank goodness, at least it wasn't "a touch of the tar brush"! 396 pp. of breathless, insufferable twaddle, though this IS the first edition of a book now generally found only in facsimile reprints, in case someone has a paper to write about the oh-so-righteous (and often hypocritical) Victorians. Reduced from $14.
