Usually the event is literary (the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author), but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions or resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, & large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the "life & works" of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses, fleetingly, in 1704, apropos of Antoine Galland's translation of "The Thousand & One Nights"; in 1898, in conjunction w/ the Dreyfus affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church & state; in 1911, in relation to Gide & their different treatments of homosexuality; & at his death in 1922. He Also Wrote A Cover Story In The New Republic, "A New Deal For America", Which Appeared Days Before Roosevelt Promised "A New Deal" In His Speech Accepting The Presidential Nomination Of The Democratic Party. Whether Roosevelt Speechwriter Samuel Rosenman Got The Phrase From Chase Is Unknown. Chase's 1938 Book The Tyranny Of Words Was An Early And Influential Popularization Of Alfred Korzybski's Theory Of General Semantics.

Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with this very November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 34 pp. About Near Fine, showing just age toning and a corner crease. See scans. This late 1954 issue was the start of something new under Smith; not much interior art yet - but there would be in 1955 and 1956.
