About The Book : It will readily be believed that I have read this short history of the Armies of India, written by Major MacMunn and illustrated by Major Lovett, with the greatest interest. Having spent so many eventful years of my life in India, and having been so intimately associated with the Indian Army, in peace and war, I think that no one is better able than myself to esteem that Army at its proper value, as regards what it has Ń with the help of British training and example Ń achieved in the past, or to appreciate what it is capable of doing in the future under the same conditions. And this intimate knowledge of its capabilities enables me to realize to the fullest extent the enormous responsibility which rests upon all who are concerned with the administration and handling of such a splendid and potent machine. It is most imperfectly known in England, and often insufficiently understood in India, how diverse and divergent in many respects are the numerous races which we enlist into our Indian Army Ń in creed, in customs, in temperament, and traditions. About The Author : Major G. F. MacMunn (1869-1952), Most widely held works by George Fletcher MacMunn: A freelance in Kashmir: a tale of the great anarchy; Leadership through the ages; Afghanistan : from Darius to Amanullah; Slavery through the ages; The religions and hidden cults of India; The martial races of India Military operations; Egypt & Palestine; The underworld of India; Rudyard Kipling: craftsman. Major A. C. Lovett (1862-1919), Lovett served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment (also known as the 61st Regiment of Foot) and travelled with them to India in 1883 where they were initially based in Karachi, then moving to Pooona, Ahmednagar, Bombay and Nasirabad. By the end of 1915 he had been promoted to Colonel and according to the records at the Gloucestershire Regiment Museum 'he was an artist, chiefly of military subjects'. During his time in India he executed illustrations for a publication by Major G.F. MacMunn entitled 'The Armies of India', which was first published in 1911. There are prints by Lovett in the collection of the British Museum, London. The Title 'The Armies of India written/authored/edited by MAJOR G. F. MacMUNN, Illustrator: MAJOR A. C.
