The author provides a detailed description of the Alps as they cover Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy, including the mountains, the people, activities, homes, flora and fauna. Neate I13. The author, mountaineer and teacher, took a number of pupils climbing in the Alps, the most famous being Mallory. Mallory (1886-1924). Unter dem Originaltitel "The romance of mountaineering" bereits 1935 in London erschienen, war eine Veröffentlichung der deutschen Übersetzung dieses alpinhistorischen Werkes erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg möglich. In der Einleitung äußert sich Irving folgendermaßen: "Zweierlei war meine Absicht: Einen Abriß der Geschichte des Bergsteigens zu schreiben, und die Rolle zu schildern, die der Mensch in den Bergen gespielt hat". Dabei verwendete der Autor auch Auszüge aus den Originalwerken.
