Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. h/b 313 pages, rough-cut pages, condition is Very Good. Lectures and Addresses delivered by Sir James Colquhoun Irvine. FOR fifty-seven years Sir James Colquhoun Irvine was connected with the University of St Andrews as student, lecturer, professor of chemistry, and principal. During the 1914-18 War, Irvine's chemistry laboratories there became a kind of research factory, and a contribution to the war-effort was made out of all proportion to their size. As an academic ambassador, Irvine travelled extensively in Europe, India, the West Indies, the United States, and Canada. He was closely connected with the Pilgrim Trust, the Commonwealth Fund, the Carnegie Trust, and many other bodies. His main activities were all of historic importance. The addresses in this volume are the verbal expression of his hopes, his experiences, his points-of-view, and his conclusions concerning those widespread activities. His love for St Andrews, his gratitude to his teachers, his studies in the history of chemistry, his views on the future of education, are but a few of the subjects dealt with in those addresses, which held the attention of audiences all over the world, and in their printed form constitute a permanent record of some of the activities and interests of a very remarkable Scot.
