Newspaper. First edition. Near Fine tabloid with a touch of tanning at the edges; appears to have been issued folded across the middle but that crease is mostly flattened. SHIPS THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING AND CARDBOARD. Every year the University of Missouri School of Journalism holds a competition to judge the best photojournalism of the year. It's known as Pictures of the Year (POY) and is one of the most prestigious arbiters of professional news photography in the world. In 1992, during the selection process the judges were recorded as they discussed the entrants in the various categories. Words on Pictures, issued as a supplement to the National Press Photographers Association's magazine, News Photographer, presents transcriptions of those conversations. That year Eugene Richards received three first place awards for different photo-essays, which are all extensively covered. Other notable first place prizes were awarded to Christopher Anderson, Steve McCurry, Randy Olson, Ken Light, Anthony Suau, and David Turnley. Other photographers of note whose work is presented include Sebastiao Salgado, Michael "Nick" Nichols, Stephen Shames, Bruno Barbey, and James Nachtwey. Edited by Jerry Jackson; introductions by Jackson and Bill Kuykendall. 28 newsprint pages; profusely illustrated in color and b&w; tabloid, 11.5 x 13.75 inches. Judges bios, list of winners.
Hardcover. Condizione: New. 'Outside the Studio' is photographer Greg Gorman's tenth monograph. This book takes Gorman (born 1949) outside the reaches of his studio portrait and figure-study work, for which he is best known, and onto the streets of Southeast Asia-uncharted territory for the artist. Traveling initially on behalf of Epson, giving symposiums on fine art digital printing throughout Singapore, Malaysia, China and India, Gorman got a firsthand look at these very different cultures at the very beginning of the digital revolution. The transition from analogue to digital cameras was another new experience for Gorman, who had shot film for more than 30 years. For Gorman, being in the studio with the likes of Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro was second nature, but being thrust in front of strangers in China, Kuala Lampur, India, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam was a new adventure.
