Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Frederick H. Billings (September 27, 1823 - September 30, 1890) was an American lawyer and financier. From 1879 to 1881 he was President of the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1848, he moved to San Francisco, becoming the city's first land claims lawyer. He later partnered with Henry Halleck, Trenor W. Park and others in the law firm of Halleck, Peachy & Billings, which became a leading law firm in San Francisco. He was a trustee of the College of California (later, the University of California at Berkeley). In 1864, he returned to Woodstock, Vermont, Billings had read Marsh's pioneering volume on ecology called Man and Nature, and set about to put into practice his theories on conservation. The Marsh-Billings- Rockefeller National Historical Park is the U.S.'s oldest managed forest. The initial printing of this volume was limited to 3500 copies. Jane Curtis is a Smith graduate, a bookshop owner, and a writer for the printed word and for radio. Peter S. Jennison is the author of The History of Woodstock, Vermont 1890-1983. He is a sixth generation Vermonter and a trustee of the Vermont Historical Society. Frank Lieberman is a European-trained typographer and designer. He is a professional graphic desinger.
