Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's turquoise paper wrappers. Black lettering and small illustration on front cover. 7 1/4" x 10 1/4." Unpaginated, c. thirteen pages, complete. Twelve black-and-white illustrations, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, faint offsetting from the original printed ink, and a few tiny spots of discoloration. Covers are clean and intact overall but have a faint dampstain on spine, bumping and chipping along corners and edges, and slight darkening and age toning. A Very Good copy. This is Number 18 in the University of Washington Chapbooks series edited by Glenn Hughes. This chapbook features twelve black-and-white illustrations of twelve woodcuts designed by printmaker Ernest Thorne Thompson. The illustrations herein are not original prints. Thompson's woodcuts depicted in the illustrations show New England scenes. The woodcuts are titled as follows: "Paul Revere's House, Boston," "Old Fayerbanke House, Dedham, 1636," "Ebb Tide, Marblehead," "Parson Capen House, Topsfield, 1673," "Lake Waldon in Winter, Lincoln," "Carriage House, Wayside Inn, Sudbury," "Grist Mill, Wayside Inn, Sudbury," "In Gloucester Town," "Salt Fishermen, Gloucester," "Scotch-Boardman House, Saugus--1651," "House of the Seven Gables, Salem," and "Lincoln--1637." In her Foreword, Bertha E. Jaques briefly describes the difficulties in making woodcut prints (such as the relative simplicity of the art form and subsequent limitations in achieving the visual effect of gradation and subtle changes in hue or brightness) and commends Thompson for his woodcuts and artistry.
