The author was present at a speech delivered by native Kentuckian, Senator Alben W. Barkley, at a mock presidential convention held at Washington and Lee University, at Lexington, Virginia, in 1956. Barkley had served previously as the Vice President of the United States. There was considerable tension because the Washington and Lee audience was composed primarily of southern conservatives, while Barkley was a Democratic New Dealer from western Kentucky. But all the tension soon gave way to excitement as Barkley delivered a fire and brimstone speech, extolling the accomplishments of the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, winning over, at least for the moment, many of the conservative audience members. But all the excitement and tension quickly turned to utter shock and silence as Barkley, nearing the end of his remarks, suddenly collapsed, fell to the floor and died instantly.
