Born in 1907 in Los Angeles, William Murray Cheney attended Los Angeles High School and the University of Southern California, which he left after two and a half years taking a job at Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles. Cheney learned printing from Thomas Perry Stricker and printed various places in Los Angeles, including at (and for) the William Andrews Clark Library.
