The debate concerning the content and aims of architectural study is highly pertinent, as work in this field is producing new methods and developing ever closer links to practical designing. In this book, six internationally renowned experts, professors of architecture - Stanford Anderson, Peter Carolin, Carsten Juel-Christiansen, Joseph Rykwert, Patrik Schumacher and Dietmar Steiner - discuss the study of architecture and its relationship to practical work., English, Year2001, Illust. ôTo me, art means the spiritualization of architecture and the deepened intensity of its own breathing,ö says the 49 year old artist, who is a native of Kuhmo, Finland. He explians how he has studied the æsoundÆ of his own works of (public) art that have been embedded in the architecture of buildings. He talks about his hopes and his aims that the building and the art works can be joined seamlessly to each other. He is best known for architecural applications of contre-jour works, such as his Light, Grace, Consolation in St. JohnÆs Church, M?nnist÷, and the Church of the Good Shepherd at Pakila in Helsinki, designed by Juha Leivisk? He attended the Free Art School (1978-81) graduating as a painter, and later taught at several Finnish art schools. He tends to integrate his works into architectural settings. What his works have in common, from the transcendental ones with strong against-the light qualities to more recent, three dimensional, topographical paint surfaces with figurative elements, is beauty created through instinctive sensitivity, beauty in its classical , aesthetic sense. Plans and elevations included., English, Year2004, Illust. B/W, Illust. Color43, ISBN 9525371174, Code 5504. Softbound, In Pristine Condition, Bio. Pages 48, Size 9 1/2öx 8 1/2ö.

A compendium of lectures from the international architecture conference in 2005, Architecture + Art looks at the fertile overlap between two competing (and complementary) disciplines. Published by the Alvar Aalto Academy, the essays explore the history of the border between art and architecture, from Aalto to Gordon Matta-Clark. What role did art play in the history of modern architecture? How did architecture influence art? What's the current state of the balance between the two fields? Illustrated with color photographs and black and white reproductions, with a foreward by Aalto Academy Professor Eeva-Llisa Pelkonen, the thought-provoking essays strive to illuminate the mystery of overlap, from Le Corbusier to Donald Judd. In a world where Frank Gehry claims architecture is art against Richard Serra's wishes, it's refreshing to learn there's more than one viewpoint at the table. The most recent publication from the Academy s forward-thinking conferences held every summer in Finland., English, Year2007, Illust. B/W54, Illust. Color61, ISBN 9789525371260, Code 6715. This book and the exhibition that accompanies it provide a fascinating addition to our knowledge of AaltoÆs work as a whole. The projects presented here have been chosen from lesser-known work of different periods and were mainly designed to be built outside Finland. Here is a voyage of discovery for the reader into what is perhaps one of the most interesting areas of AaltoÆs work. How unrealised designs would have turned out in reality, however, will remain an eternal question mark. Includes plans and elevations., English/ Finnish, Year2002, Illust. B/W340, Illust.
